Pilates is based on ten principles developed in the early 1900's by Joseph Pilates: concentration, control, center, fluidity, precision, breath, imagination, intuition and integration. Pilates believed that by practicing these disciplines, the mind and the body’s natural intelligence would begin to self-correct misalignments and distorted movement patterns. His exercise system emphasized the development of the core muscle groups (the upper back, abdominals, hips and lower back). Pilates is a valuable tool for increasing strength, definition and optimal posture.Pilates is a comprehensive head-to-toe workout, but it’s often misidentified as women’s exercise. In fact, Pilates was originally created for men. Many professional male athletes, such as Tiger Woods, Jason Kidd, Curt Schilling and Ruben Brown, have added Pilates to their training programs to enhance their strength, coordination and flexibility.
Practicing Pilates under the highly trained eye of Absolute Center's certified instructors can dramatically enhance your mind/body synergy. At ABC, we have a full line of Pilates equipment, with Mat, Reformer and Equipment classes scheduled throughout the week. Students can establish an understanding and competence in the fundamental Pilates principles through one-on-one focus and feedback, and then branch out from there.
